Pakistan Low Cost Rural Housing
Despite being responsible for a majority of the economic productivity, the rural population of Pakistan is incredibly under served by the government, and many lack access to even the most basic facilities. In the last few years, things have only gotten worse as millions of people have been displaced by earthquakes and severe flooding. This project investigates whether the incremental housing approach might be able to alleviate some of these problems and provide the rural citizens with a more dignified living conditions and a home which can grow with the family and the community. The project uses a clustering strategy, where a number of compounds are arranged around a shared courtyard. This way, facilities like water, electricity and waste management can be shared, reducing the cost per family. This also reduces material use, and provided mutual shading and flood protection. Each compound is given a significant plot to expand onto, but the initial building size remains quite minimal to keep the capital cost low. In this way the immediate housing need can be satisfied, without compromising on the desire for future growth.
